Carrying Out My Game Plan

My Action plan is to develop better methods of assessments for projects that are subjective in nature and to develop a better system of communication between students and parents.

The resources I shall need will come from a combination of sources such as, colleagues, professional development courses and administration.  I may also need the assistance of the district technology supervisor to develop a way to communicate to parents and students through the district website.

I have sent out and email to my colleagues, in the form of a Google group request, in order to form an in house PLC on assessment stratagems.

  2. Tom,

Developing a PLC on assessment stratagems is a great idea! With the summer break approaching do you plan on collaborating when school commences again, or will you do so during the break? This can be a challenge to accomplish very much during the summer, but if you work online it might be more successful than collaboration in the busy beginning of the school year.

Have you thought about researching how other districts or teachers assess student progress in order to bring references to your PLC? I am sure the Walden Library has an abundance of resources that might meet your needs!

    Good luck!

  3. Tom,

I really like your idea of improving communication between you and your students in terms of assessment. Making a more substantive rubric or evaluation system is important in this day of authentic assessment and mastery teaching.

Do you envision continuing to use rubrics to evaluate student work or are you hoping to use a different form of assessment? One thing that I have noticed with rubrics is that teachers will often try to create a device that is "one size fits all" so that they can use it over and over again. Although our lives are busy and a generalized rubric may serve a purpose, it often does not really meet the needs that it was designed to serve for each particular assessment opportunity. How do you envision making your devices relevant to the purpose but also easy for students, and let us not forget parents, easy to understand? Also how will you share this information with the parents prior to use? Please be sure to share feedback on how you do this. I think there are many of us who would like to grow in this area as well!

  4. Tom,

As the others have said, I too like your use of resources to make it a group effort. Why reinvent the wheel if there is a group of people that have already done some of the ground work.

Have you Googled it yet? I am sure there are blogs that could provide you with information about certain aspects that may be more difficult than you may foresee.
